For All Your Insurance Needs

Colt’s Commentary- April 2022: What is Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

Hey there! Colt here,

Ever look at your auto insurance and wonder what the heck is Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

Well, I’m here to answer that for you!

Let’s start with an alarming fact, in 2019, Michigan had the 2nd highest number of uninsured drivers in the country. At about 25% of drivers strolling around without insurance, we were just 5% away from being number 1 in the country (losing only to Mississippi). Now imagine what would happen if you were injured in an auto accident with another driver that was at-fault and didn’t have insurance or had inadequate insurance? Hopefully you would have insurance to cover that!

  • Uninsured Motorist: This coverage pays if you or members of your household are hit by a driver who does not have auto insurance and are injured.
    • This can also apply in the event of a hit and run.
  • Underinsured Motorist: This coverage protects you when you or members of your household are injured in a car accident caused by someone who has insurance, but their policy limits are not high enough to cover the damage to you or your vehicle. In this case the other driver would be considered “underinsured.”

I hope this has been as interesting for you to learn as it was for me to write!
