Colt’s Commentary April 2023 – Water Backup Coverage

Hey there,

We have all heard the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers.” This has gotten me thinking about water damage, and more importantly, how it is covered under insurance.

There are a few different types of coverage for incidents of water getting into the house, but today we are going to focus on water backup coverage.

Water backup coverage protects against damage to your home or personal property because of water that backups through sewers, drains, and discharges or overflows from a sump, sump pump, or related equipment. This is usually not automatically included in your homeowners policy, but is an option that you can add.

A few ways to prevent water backup are:
– Not pouring grease down your drain
– Regularly cleaning out your gutters and downspouts
– Watching what you flush down your toilet (no paper towels, feminine products, etc.)

If you have any other questions about the benefits of water backup coverage or about whether or not it is included on your homeowners policy, give us a call!
